A board report is the written pre-read: the thing directors are meant to have absorbed before anyone speaks. Its length is genuinely unpredictable — a quiet quarter is six pages, a financing quarter is twenty — which is exactly why it belongs in Google Docs rather than in slides. Tables grow with the metrics you track, appendices sit at the back, and page breaks look after themselves.

Separate the numbers from the argument

The pack works when the recurring numbers come from the source and only the argument is written each time. Put the KPI rows, cash position and headcount in the sheet or base you already close with, and keep the CEO summary, functional commentary and the framing of each decision in text fields next to them. What usually goes wrong is a pack rebuilt by pasting from five different documents: a figure gets updated in the finance model after someone copied it, and the board discusses a number nobody holds any more. Generating from one record also makes the decisions section explicit — every item the board is being asked to approve is a row, so none of them quietly disappears into a paragraph.

Common questions, answered

Should I send a board report or a board deck? +
Send the report when directors read before the meeting and you want the detail on the record: it is a document, so it can run to fifteen pages of tables and commentary without anyone squeezing text onto a slide. Use the board deck when the material is presented and discussed live. Plenty of boards get both, generated from the same KPI table so the two can never disagree.
Where do the numbers in the pack come from? +
From the sources you already close the period with: a Google Sheet of KPIs, an Airtable base, a SQL database, a CSV export or an API. Each figure maps to a placeholder once. The written parts — the CEO summary, the functional updates, the framing of each decision — live in text fields beside the numbers, so the pack is assembled rather than rewritten.
Can I use my own board pack design? +
Yes. Board packs tend to follow whatever the chair is used to reading. Rebuild that format as a Google Doc with your own headings, table styles and cover, mark the variable parts as placeholders, and generate against it. This layout is only a starting shape.
Can the pack be produced automatically before each meeting? +
Yes. Schedule a run for a few days before the meeting date and it produces the Doc and a PDF from the period that has just closed. From the Pro plan up you can also trigger the run over the API, or from n8n, Make or Zapier once the management accounts are marked final.
