An executive summary is not an abstract of a longer document, it is the argument compressed: what the situation is, what was found, what should happen and who has to decide. Because it should stay to a single page, a Google Doc suits it — the text sets itself, a slightly longer finding reflows rather than overflowing a slide, and the file is the same object as the report it fronts.

Write it from the findings, not from the report

The reliable way to produce a summary is to build it from records the analysis already produced — a handful of findings, the two or three figures that carry the case, and the decision being asked for — rather than by rereading the full document and condensing it. Keep those as rows against the report record and the summary is generated from the same entries that feed the report itself, so the two cannot say different things. The usual failure is a summary written last, in a hurry, that softens the recommendation the report actually reached, leaving the only page most people read as the one least connected to the work.

Common questions, answered

How long should an executive summary be? +
One page, and treating that as a hard rule is what makes it useful. If it runs to three, the reader is back to reading the report. Keeping the findings and figures as records helps here, because you cap the loop at four or five findings and the constraint is enforced by the data rather than by whoever is writing that week.
Where does the content come from? +
From a record per document: the title, owner, date, the findings, the headline figures and the decision being requested. That can sit in a Google Sheet, an Airtable base, a database, a CSV upload or your own API. The template places those fields, so the summary and the report it fronts are drawn from the same entries rather than written twice.
Can I generate a summary for every paper going to a committee? +
Yes. Filter the papers table to the ones on this month's agenda and one run produces a summary per paper, each as a Doc and a PDF. That is the common case for committees and boards, where the pack is a set of papers each needing the same front sheet.
Can I use our own one-page layout? +
Yes. Build it in Google Docs with your own masthead, column structure and typography, mark the variable parts as placeholders, and generate against it. A summary page is mostly typography, so it is worth setting properly once and never touching the layout again.
