A price list is a document whose length nobody controls. It is as long as your catalogue is, and it changes whenever a price does — which is why the version people actually have in their inbox is usually months behind the one in your system. Google Docs suits it because tables grow, pages break themselves, and a category added to your data simply becomes another section rather than a layout problem.

Shape the data as categories, then products

The template mirrors your catalogue’s structure, so it is worth getting that structure right before anything else: one table of products, each with a category, SKU, unit and price, rather than pricing spread across several sheets. A nested loop then repeats a section per category and a row per product inside it. Once that holds, the interesting variations are free — a trade list and a retail list are the same template pointed at a different price column, and a regional list is a filtered subset of the same rows.

Common questions, answered

Can I use my own price list design? +
Yes. Build the master in Google Docs with your cover, category headings and table styles, mark the category and product blocks as repeating placeholders, and generate against that. The design is yours; the catalogue decides how many sections and rows appear in it.
Can one product table produce different lists for different customers? +
Yes, and this is the usual reason to automate it. Filter the catalogue to the products and price column that apply to a segment — trade, retail, a region, a single key account — and one run produces a list per segment from the same source data.
How are categories and products nested? +
As a loop inside a loop. The outer loop repeats a section per category and the inner loop repeats a row per product within it, so adding a category in your data adds a section to the document without anyone rebuilding the layout.
Where does the catalogue data come from? +
Airtable, Google Sheets, a SQL database, a CSV upload or your own system through a REST data source. Because the list is generated rather than edited, the effective date on the cover and the prices in the table always come from the same run.
